چکیده

I N T R O D U C T I O N This study is concerned with the relationship of K + fluxes to the electrically measured membrane conductance and the level o f the resting potential of giant internodal cells of Nitella. In such studies it has been customary to assume that electrogenic ion p u m p i n g is present and that a relatively large passive re turn cur rent serves to electrically balance it. The acceptability o f this idea was greatly influenced by Kitasato's (1968) repor t suggesting the distinct possibility o f H + as the major ion both in active extrusion and in the passive re turn cur ren t (cf. Anderson , 1973). Before this an unresolved problem existed in that the typical measured electrical conductance o f Characean cells was more than 10 times greater than that predicted f rom the resting fluxes o f K +, Na +, and CI(Williams et al., 1964), as calculated by the Goldman (1943) flux equation. This problem was apparent ly solved by attr ibuting the unexplained conductance to H + (Kitasato, 1968). It is to be noted that membrane conductance is computed f rom the displacement o f the resting potential when an applied cur ren t o f known magni tude is J. GEN. The Formation and Properties of Thin Lipid Membranes from HK and LK Sheep Red Cell Lipids

Lipids were obtained from high potassium (HK) and low potassium (LK) sheep red cells by sequential extraction of the erythrocytes with isopropanol-chloroform, chloroform-methanol-0.1 M KCl, and chloroform. The extract contained cholesterol and phospholipid in a molar ratio of 0.8:1.0, and less than 1% protein contaminant. Stable thin lipid membranes separating two aqueous compartments were form...

Studies on the Formation and Ionization of the Compounds of Casein with Alkali

1. The deposition of casein on a platinum anode which takes place on the passage of a direct current through solutions of alkali caseinates was quantitatively studied, and it was found that: (a) the amount of casein which is deposited is directly proportional to the current, i.e. it obeys Faraday's law; (b) the amount of casein deposited is inversely proportional (within the limits studied) to ...

Potassium transference in Nitella

Transmembrane movements of K+ and Cl- were studied under a variety of experimental conditions. Potassium was found to carry more than 50% of an externally applied inward positive current. The increase in K+ influx was much greater than that predicted by the purely passive model. The increase in Cl- efflux accounted for less than 10% of the applied current, in agreement with the value predicted ...
